Aquest mes d’octubre algunes persones del club de lectura en anglès s’han trobat a la Biblioteca per parlar de “Margot Got Money Trouble”, de Rufi Thorpe.
Ens han fet arribar les seves impressions. Us les deixem tot seguit:
“For this month's book club we discussed Rufi Thorpe's Margot got money trouble
We covered several of the themes within the book including addiction, autonomy, social media, parenting, young adult pregnancy, sexual assault, sex work, societal pressures, and so much more.
It was interesting to discuss a book written in the last three years and compare the main character Margo's situation to what it would be like for someone under a similar circumstance 30 or 40 years ago.
We talked about how awful all of the parents in the book were portrayed, with the exception of Margot, and how exceptional it was that she was so mature at 19 years old.
We discussed the impact of social media on options and examples for ways of living. We also explored how social media has created new pathways like only fans as work-from-home job opportunities.
In a fun tangent, the Americans detailed the inner workings of several US food chains, and how parts of the book were incredibly unrealistic, including how Margot was able to afford such a high rent on American waitresses tips.
In a heavier topic, we discussed the general lack of urgency around solving violence against women, and how prevalent predators have continued to be within society.
Overall, everyone seem to enjoy the book and agree that the TV adaptation was not nearly as good.
